A Life Interrupted

by - September 23, 2010

I'm reading this book about the Prophet Jonah and how his life was interrupted when God asked him to leave his comfort zone and do something else. I can draw many similarities between his behavior and mine, but suffice it to say, we all have to deal with life's interruptions in one form or another. In a previous post, I talked about how I became self-employed and the struggles I went through. If I were to characterize my initial reaction to being self-employed it would be disappointment, followed by anger, and finally depression. Once I was able to let go of the vision I had for my life and embrace being self-employed, things changed dramatically for me. My life interrupted became a life on the right track!

Recently a friend asked me if I was interested in doing an entrepreneur workshop at the 2011 National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) conference. I was very active in NSBE during college, so I've been to plenty of these conferences and even attended some of the workshops. I kind of brushed it off initially, but she convinced me that my experiences may help other people. Two weeks ago I submitted a proposal for workshop entitled "Going from Consultant to Business Owner" and yesterday I found out it was accepted! I'm slightly blown away and scared at the moment, but I plan to do my best. Ironically when I wrote the proposal, I also drafted an outline, so I have the initial planning done already. The conference is in March, but I hope to have a draft done in November and maybe find a way to give the workshop to some non-engineers and see how it goes over. I want the proposal done and the bugs worked out by January so that I can just just relax and present when it's time. That is the plan anyways!
