Ode To Mom

by - May 09, 2010

Don't let the title of this post confuse you, there will be no poetry in here. Since today is Mother's day, I was just taking some time to shout out my Mom. That's her in the picture above. She was 21 years old and at a friend's wedding showing everyone that she had lost all her baby weight in 2 short months. We are very much alike in many ways...

I've definitely discussed our complex relationship in depth, but I've never taken the time to discuss the other side. My Mom is a good Mother. I remember growing up thinking my Mom could do any and everything. Martha Stewart ain't got nothing on Mama Martha (that's what our cousin's called her growing up). I later realized that she was able to master anything she put her mind to, and I just now realized I have the same ability. She was the most "cookinist" woman I know and can make anything (just don't ask her to bake!). I was taught how to cook, clean, and take care of a household. She used to make my sister and I matching dresses that looked like they came out of the store. My sister always got a violet dress and mine was ALWAYS pink! As my natural hair gets longer, I marvel at the patience she showed every Sunday after church when she did our hair. She did my natural hair for years without the assistance of hair blogs or even the internet. Just water and Blue Magic! I'm still trying to get my hair to the length she had it. I learned how to be a lady by watching her. I remember walking around in her kitten heels when I was in elementary school. Even though I went through a tomboy phase that lasted until about age 24, I'm now very much like the woman you see in the picture.

I often wonder if I relationship will get better and I think it will. I just think we have expectations of each other that we need to let go of. At that point, we will be able to be friends in addition to Mother and daughter.
